Living Canvas Eureka! revels in new discovery
Living Canvas Eureka! is the latest Living Canvas production that will premiere as part of the Naked July Festival, from June 29 through August 11 in National Pastime Theater's new space at 941 W Lawrence Ave., in Chicago.
The Living Canvas is a unique performance art organization creating stunning, humorous, and moving imagery using the naked human body as a canvas for projected textures. Through this technique, the performers tell stories and evoke visions, utilizing movement of all kinds -- from dance to acrobatics -- plus spoken word and music.
Eureka! is the ninth Living Canvas show to be performed in Chicago. Eureka! focuses on discovery. It contains series of vignettes ranging from silly to powerful, from spoken word to naked acrobatics on scaffolding, all work to discover much about our love-and-hate-affair with the human body. The show is also about discovery of new technology, incorporating new hand-held projectors and other devices. And it's about discovery of the new National Pastime Theater space.
For Eureka!, Artistic Director Pete Guither is working with a large group of collaborators, both in and outside the cast, to explore and create individual pieces that create the arc of the whole production. "Collaboration is the heart and soul of Canvas," says Guither. "Each member is not only baring their skin on stage, but is contributing to, and shaping, the artistry of the work."
Even the audience gets a chance to collaborate, as the show includes a piece that won't quite work properly without some help. Audience members are invited (but not required) to shed their clothes and help out the piece, and see what it's like to play in the projections. There is also an open discussion after each performance with the cast.
The performing ensemble is: Sarah Aubry, Arielle Basille, Mike Brown, Chris Bryant, Carrie Campana, Xavier C.D. FitzSimons, Trace Gamache, Grace Gimpel, Amber Hargroder, Miona Lee, Tim Lee, Chase Leynaud, Jeffrey Rubin, Lauren Shufelt, and Teagan Walsh-Davis. Principals (segment leaders) are Bill Daniel, Gaby Labotka, Jeffrey Rubin, Lauren Shufelt, and Christie Willis. Production team includes Adam Fox (sound design), Jerry Hui (original music), Meagan Piccochi (choreography), Artemis Steakley-Freeman and Eli Van Sickel (writers).
Living Canvas Eureka! shows run Fridays and Saturdays at 10:00 p.m. June 29 through August 11. Tickets are $20
